Sri Lanka’s Safiya Yamik delivered a sensational performance at the 4th South Asian Games in India today (26), winning the gold medal in the women’s 200m event with a remarkable time of 23.58 seconds, setting a new meet record.

She broke a 27-year-old record previously held by India’s legendary sprinter P.T. Usha, set in 1998.

With this victory, Yamik has now secured three gold medals at the ongoing Games — having earlier clinched gold in the women’s 100m with a time of 11.53 seconds and also in the women’s 4×100m relay, where the Sri Lankan team clocked 44.70 seconds.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Rasara Wijesooriya claimed gold in the women’s 10,000m event, finishing with an impressive time of 34:39.95.

In the men’s 200m event, Sri Lankan sprinter Indusara Vidushan secured the silver medal, recording a time of 21.42 seconds.

Sri Lanka’s strong performances continue to elevate the nation’s standing in athletics at the regional level.
