The announcement was made on Friday at a special media briefing held at the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). Attending the event were Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, Acting Secretary of the Digital Economy Ministry and Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Waruna Sri Dhanapala, TRCSL Director General Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Bandula Herath, Chairman of the 5G Auction Committee and Finance Ministry Director General Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, and TRCSL Director Shantha Gunanandana.
Deputy Minister Weeraratne said the final allocation of spectrum would lay a strong foundation for expanding next-generation telecommunications services, positioning 5G as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and industrial development.
He noted that high-speed, low-latency internet and advanced digital infrastructure could transform multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and apparel manufacturing. As examples, he highlighted how smart sensors in agriculture could improve yields and reduce resource waste, while automation in apparel manufacturing could enhance quality and productivity.
The government expects the spectrum auction to accelerate Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in the global economy.
