World Tourism Day, observed annually on September 27, marks a significant occasion that emphasizes the true value of tourism and its future growth for humanity.

First declared in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the day aims to highlight tourism’s contributions to cultural, economic, and social development across the globe.

Today, tourism is one of the largest economic sectors worldwide, creating jobs, fostering peace, and building cooperation among nations. It goes beyond sightseeing offering opportunities to explore new cultures, connect with people, and broaden global perspectives.

Tourism appeals to diverse interests, from nature lovers and cultural explorers to adventure seekers, pilgrims, and beach holidaymakers. Each year the celebration takes place under a unique theme. In 2023, the focus was “Tourism and Green Investments,” in 2024 it highlighted “Tourism and Peace,” and in 2025 the theme is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”

Sri Lanka, with its rich heritage, natural beauty, and UNESCO World Heritage sites, has long been a top travel destination. Despite challenges in recent years including political instability, the Easter attacks, the pandemic, and economic hardship the sector has shown signs of recovery between 2024 and 2025. Recognition by Time Out magazine naming Sri Lanka the world’s best destination to visit in October further boosts confidence in the island’s tourism revival.

In Sri Lanka, several events are being held to mark World Tourism Day:

Sept 27–28: A tourism job fair and exhibition at One Galle Face, featuring around 75 stalls.

Oct 1: The 10th International Tourism Research Conference (ITRC) at BMICH, with participation from over 30 international scholars.

Oct 1: The final round of the All-Island School Tourism Society competition at Waters Edge.

Oct 2: The International Tourism Leaders’ Summit (ITLS) at BMICH, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Wijitha Herath.

On this World Tourism Day, Sri Lanka and the global community are reminded that tourism is not merely a source of foreign exchange but also a powerful medium to create experiences, share knowledge, foster joy, generate employment, and showcase cultural identity to the world.
