Chamal Rajapaksa faces possible arrest over fraud allegations

According to a report by Silumina, Rajapaksa is under investigation by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations that he unlawfully claimed Rs. 152.26 million from the government.
The claim was based on purported damages to a property in Magama, Tissamaharama, allegedly destroyed during the unrest on May 9, 2022. However, investigators have found that the property is not legally owned by Rajapaksa and is registered under another individual’s name. Additionally, evidence indicates that the property only housed a paddy warehouse not a residence as claimed.
Rajapaksa had submitted an affidavit asserting possession of the property, but the investigation has since cast serious doubt on the legitimacy of his claim. He is expected to be questioned by authorities in the coming days.
