What’s going to happen to the Year 5 Scholarship Exam?

There is currently no formal proposal or policy in place to remove the Grade 5 Scholarship Exam,” PM Amarasuriya said. “Any reforms to the education system, particularly those affecting students and families so directly, would be preceded by broad public consultation and expert input.”
The Grade 5 Scholarship Exam, introduced decades ago, has served as a key gateway for students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds to access better-resourced schools. However, recent discussions within educational circles have raised questions about the exam’s relevance and the pressure it places on young students.
PM Amarasuriya emphasized that while education reform remains a government priority, decisions would be made carefully and inclusively. “We recognize the emotional and educational impact such changes can have. Our aim is to ensure that any reforms improve access, equity, and quality in education across the country.”
She further urged the public to rely on official communications from the Ministry of Education and avoid spreading misinformation.
