The Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning indicating that showers or thundershowers will occur at several locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in Nuwara-Eliya and Ampara districts, starting after 2.00 p.m. today.

Fairly heavy showers, with rainfall amounts reaching up to 50 mm, are expected in some areas of the Southern province and the Ratnapura district.

Misty conditions are also anticipated in the morning hours in areas across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces, including Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala districts.

The general public is urged to take precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. The authorities have recommended being cautious when outdoors and securing loose objects to prevent harm.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather forecast for sea areas surrounding the island for the next 24 hours, with the following details:

  • Rain Conditions: Showers or thundershowers are likely in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota during the evening or night.
  • Winds: Winds will be variable in direction, with speeds ranging from 20 to 30 km/h.
  • Sea State: The state of the sea around the island will be slight to moderate. However, temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Marine travelers are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on weather changes, especially in areas prone to thundershowers.
