The Meteorology Department has issued a weather alert for today, forecasting showers and thundershowers in several regions of Sri Lanka. From 2:00 p.m. onwards, areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Northwestern provinces are likely to experience showers, with fairly heavy rainfall of up to 75mm expected in some parts of these regions.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, several spells of showers are also anticipated in the Uva and Eastern provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district.

Misty conditions are expected in the morning in certain areas, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala.

The general public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Stay safe and stay informed as weather conditions may change rapidly.

Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island – Next 24 Hours

Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Hambantota via Batticaloa and Pottuvil. Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Puttalam via Colombo during the evening or night. Mainly fair weather will prevail over other sea areas around the island.

Winds:
Winds will be from the North-east or East, with speeds ranging from 20 to 35 km/h. Winds may increase up to 40 km/h at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota via Matara, and from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

State of Sea:
Sea conditions will be slight to moderate around the island. However, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

Mariners are advised to exercise caution due to the possibility of strong gusty winds and rough seas during thundershowers.
