Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon appeared before the Matara Magistrate's Court this morning, where he surrendered to authorities.

Tennakoon, who is wanted in connection with the 2023 shooting incident at a prominent hotel in Weligama, had arrived at the court to comply with legal proceedings.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court had previously issued an arrest warrant for Tennakoon after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) made a request for his immediate arrest. Tennakoon, however, filed a writ petition in the Court of Appeal, seeking an interim order to suspend the arrest directive. On Monday, the Court of Appeal dismissed his petition, effectively upholding the arrest order issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.

The latest developments come after an open warrant was issued for Tennakoon’s arrest following the dismissal of his writ petition. Authorities now proceed with the legal steps to address the charges related to the shooting incident in Weligama.
