The Attorney General has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) not to arrest the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and five other officers in connection with the 2023 shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama.
This decision comes after an agreement was reached between the Attorney General and the petitioners’ lawyers.
However, the directive does not extend to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who remains the sole officer still under potential arrest in connection with the case.
The shooting incident, which occurred in 2023, had drawn significant public attention and led to calls for a thorough investigation into the actions of the involved officers. While the AG's directive effectively halts further action against the CCD officers, IGP Tennakoon's situation remains unresolved, as he is still subject to arrest pending further legal developments.
The legal community is closely watching the case, as it continues to raise questions regarding accountability and the actions of law enforcement officials involved in the shooting.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the status of IGP Tennakoon and any other developments in the case.
