As of this morning, March 12, the Irrigation Department has reported that 42 out of the 73 main reservoirs across the country are overflowing due to the ongoing heavy rains. The department has confirmed that these reservoirs are being discharged to manage the excess water levels.

The spillage includes major reservoirs across multiple districts, with 7 in the Ampara District, 6 in Anuradhapura, 5 in Badulla, 3 in Polonnaruwa, and 3 in Trincomalee. Among the affected reservoirs are some of the country's key water storage sites, including Minneriya, Kaudulla, Kantale, Rajangana, Lunugamvehera, Senanayake Samudra, and Parakrama Samudra.

The department urges the public, especially those living in downstream areas, to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the heavy rains continue to impact water levels across the country. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
