The Government Medical Officers's Association (GMOA) has announced a nationwide one-day token strike in protest against the brutal sexual assault of a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital on the night of March 10, 2025.
The GMOA’s Executive Committee has confirmed that the strike will commence on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 8:00 AM and will continue without interruption until 8:00 AM on Thursday, March 13, 2025. This protest aims to highlight the growing concerns about the safety of medical professionals in the country.
While the strike will impact regular medical services across all hospitals, emergency treatment services will continue without disruption. Special provisions will be made to ensure the uninterrupted care of critical patients.
Exemptions from the strike include children’s hospitals, maternity hospitals, kidney treatment units, the National Institute of Mental Health, and military hospitals, where medical services will remain operational.
The GMOA's decision comes in response to the violent assault on the female doctor, which has sparked widespread outrage among the medical community and the general public. The association is calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety and security of healthcare workers in Sri Lanka.
The GMOA is also urging the authorities to take swift action to bring the perpetrators of the assault to justice.
