The Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory for several regions in Sri Lanka, forecasting showers and thundershowers throughout the day. Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the districts of Matale and Nuwara-Eliya.
Elsewhere, showers or thundershowers will be widespread during the afternoon and night.
Heavy rainfall, exceeding 100 mm, is anticipated in some areas of Uva province and in the districts of Batticaloa, Ampara, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Polonnaruwa, and Hambantota. Meanwhile, fairly heavy showers, exceeding 75 mm, are expected in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the districts of Galle and Matara.
The public is also advised to be cautious of fairly strong winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h, particularly in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, and North-western provinces, as well as in Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, and Hambantota districts.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which are expected during thundershowers.
Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around the Island – Next 24 Hours

The Sri Lanka Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast for the sea areas surrounding the island over the next 24 hours.
Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Colombo, passing through Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Hambantota, and Galle. Heavy showers may occur in the sea areas extending from Batticaloa to Hambantota via Pottuvil. Showers or thundershowers could also affect other sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night.
Winds:
Winds are forecast to be from the north-east at speeds of 30-40 km/h. However, the wind speed may increase to 45-50 km/h at times in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankasanthurai, as well as from Galle to Hambantota via Matara, will be fairly rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will experience moderate conditions.
Additional Alerts:
During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are likely to occur. Mariners and those planning to engage in sea activities should exercise caution and stay updated on weather warnings.
