Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya has been elected as the new President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL). Amarasuriya, who previously served as the Secretary of BASL, brings a wealth of experience to the role, with an extensive appellate court practice specializing in public law and various areas of civil litigation, including contractual, commercial, property, taxation, and banking law.

Throughout his distinguished career, Amarasuriya has held multiple significant positions across both state and private sector institutions. 

He is currently serving as a Board/Committee Member of the Sri Lanka Accounting and Auditing Standards Monitoring Board, and is a member of the Standing Committee of Legal Studies at the University Grants Commission. Additionally, 

Mr. Amarasuriya is a Council Member of the University of Colombo and represents Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Legal Education Association. He is also an Executive Committee Member of LAWASIA, further enhancing his global legal connections.

Mr.Amarasuriya’s leadership experience extends to several key legal and regulatory bodies. He has served as a member of the Council of Legal Education of Sri Lanka, a former Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, and as a Member of the Board of Governors of the Sri Lanka National Arbitration Centre. 

He also held the position of Immediate Past President of the Alumni Association of the University of Colombo.

With his diverse expertise and commitment to the legal profession, Amarasuriya’s election marks a new chapter for the BASL, as he takes on the role of President with a vision to continue advancing the legal landscape in Sri Lanka.
