Court of Appeal Issues Interim Order to Halt Basnayake Nilame Election at Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya.

Court of Appeal has issued an interim order preventing the election scheduled for tomorrow (February 11) to select the Basnayake Nilame of the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya.

The ruling was made by Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice M.T.M. Lafar, in response to a writ petition filed by S.V. Chandrasinghe, who had been appointed as the temporary custodian of the Devalaya.

Chandrasinghe's petition argued that the election process should be temporarily halted, citing legal concerns. As a result, the court's order has postponed the planned election, raising questions about the future of the Basnayake Nilame appointment at the renowned temple.

The Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya, an important religious site in Sri Lanka, has been the center of attention in recent weeks, as the election of its Basnayake Nilame is seen as a significant event within the local community. The court’s decision adds further complexity to the ongoing situation.
