In a gesture of goodwill and solidarity, the Saudi Arabian government has donated 50,000 kilograms of dates to be distributed among Muslim devotees in Sri Lanka during the holy month of Ramadan.
The symbolic handover took place at a ceremony attended by key government figures and dignitaries.
The donation was officially presented to Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, the Minister of Buddhism, Religious, and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka, by the Saudi Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Khalid bin Hammoud Al-Khatani. This marks another annual tradition, as Saudi Arabia continues to support Muslim communities in friendly countries by providing dates for Ramadan consumption.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment and Foreign Affairs, Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of National Integration, Mohamed Munir Mulaffar, and Deputy Speaker, Dr. Rizvi Salli, who all expressed their gratitude for the generous donation.
The annual date donation from Saudi Arabia to Sri Lanka, along with other friendly nations, highlights the strong diplomatic ties and shared cultural and religious values between the two countries. The dates will be distributed to Muslim communities across Sri Lanka, ensuring they can break their fast with a taste of tradition during Ramadan.
