In a move to address the ongoing salt shortage, Sri Lanka has received its first shipment of imported salt from India today, marking the country's first salt import in 15 years.

The shipment, comprising 1,485 metric tons, arrives as part of a broader effort to mitigate the impacts of adverse weather conditions on the local salt industry, which has resulted in a significant shortfall in supply.

The decision to import salt comes after local salt production was severely affected by unexpected weather patterns, disrupting the local industry’s ability to meet national demand. To stabilize the market and ensure an uninterrupted supply of salt, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the importation of a total of 30,000 metric tons.

The government has committed to continuing the importation of salt from India, with plans to sustain these shipments through February 28, 2025. The initiative aims to prevent any further disruption to the salt supply, which is crucial for both domestic consumption and industrial use.

This marks a significant development for the island nation, as it navigates through a critical phase in its effort to stabilize essential goods amidst challenging environmental conditions.
