The Department of Meteorology has warned of thundershowers in the Uva and Southern provinces, as well as several districts today. The adverse weather has caused significant disruption, with 92,471 people from 27,751 families affected by the ongoing heavy rains.

Areas particularly impacted include the Uva and Southern provinces, along with the Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts. The Meteorological Department forecasts more rain in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, while the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces may experience evening or nighttime showers.

As a result of the heavy rainfall, rivers across the country are seeing rising water levels, with multiple sluice gates still open at various reservoirs. Some of the key affected locations include the Anuradhapura, Mahawilachchiya, Nuwara Wewa, and several others, which have led to concerns over potential flooding.

The Disaster Management Center has reported that 438 individuals from 142 families are currently housed in temporary shelters. In addition, the Mahaweli River’s overflow has caused significant disruption, with the road leading to the Somawathiya shrine submerged for the past 12 days. The submerged Anuradhapura-Padaviya-Vavuniya road has prompted the Navy to deploy two boats for transportation purposes.

Authorities have also issued warnings about a landslide that has blocked the main road from the Malapattawa area on the Nuwara Eliya-Padiyapelella road. Police are urging travelers to use alternative routes to avoid further delays and risks.

The situation remains critical as the weather conditions continue to affect many districts across the country. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and advising the public to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
