The Ministry of Energy announced that electricity tariff recommendations from the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka will be implemented after receiving formal approval.

The Ministry stated that these recommendations will proceed once officially communicated, following guidance from the Ministry of Finance.

The tariff reduction comes despite the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) proposing that tariffs remain unchanged for six months. In response, the PUCSL conducted public consultations from December 17, 2024, to January 10, 2025, receiving around 400 proposals.

Following these discussions, the PUCSL recommended a 20% reduction in electricity tariffs, which is now awaiting final approval.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody announced that the government will prioritize implementing the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka’s (PUCSL) recommendations to lower electricity tariffs. He highlighted that this marks the initial step in a plan to achieve a 30% tariff reduction over the next three years, benefiting domestic, hotel, and industrial sectors.
