Sri Lanka Railways announced that nearly 30 train journeys were disrupted this morning ( January 17) due to a shortage of locomotive engine drivers.

According to the Railway Department, 68 drivers are required to operate the current schedule, but only 48 reported for duty today. Trade union sources confirmed that 27 drivers were absent, citing preparations for a promotional examination scheduled for Sunday ( January 19).

The department warned that train services could face delays or cancellations until Sunday if the shortage persists. Passengers are advised to stay updated on schedule changes.
