In a significant boost to Sri Lanka's maritime security and disaster relief capabilities, the Australian government has officially handed over a Beechcraft King Air 350 aircraft to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF). The aircraft was formally inducted into the SLAF during a ceremony held today, marking an important milestone in the two nations' ongoing security partnership.

The aircraft will be assigned to the No. 03 Maritime Squadron at the SLAF Academy in China Bay and will play a crucial role in enhancing Sri Lanka’s efforts to combat maritime threats, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, and other illegal activities in the Indian Ocean. It will also support disaster relief missions and search and rescue operations.

The induction ceremony was attended by key figures including Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha, Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Paul Stephens, and Rear Admiral Brett Sonter, Commander of the Joint Agency Task Force Operation Sovereign Borders.

Rear Admiral Sonter praised the collaboration, noting that the aircraft not only enhances SLAF’s operational capacity but also provides vital training opportunities for Sri Lankan personnel. “This is more than just a hardware upgrade. It’s about building the next generation of skilled SLAF personnel, ensuring both nations remain resilient in the face of illegal maritime activities,” he said.

The Beechcraft King Air 350, equipped for both surveillance and air mobility, will significantly augment Sri Lanka’s maritime security efforts while reinforcing the longstanding security partnership between Sri Lanka and Australia.
