The Public Health Inspectors Union (PHIU) has started inspections to identify plastic and polythene products unfit for use, particularly items being sold ahead of the new school year and festive season.
Several Retail stores in Colombo and Puttalam have already been inspected as part of this initiative.
PHIU President Upul Rohana advised the public to carefully check plastic products before purchasing. He urged the public to verify the authenticity of plastic products by checking for specific markings, such as a wine glass symbol or the number 5 printed at the bottom or on the product. Items made from polypropylene (PP), identified by the number 5 within a triangle of arrows, are known to be durable, lightweight, and safe, especially for use in food containers.
He warned against buying unmarked plastic products with these symbols , as they may pose health risks and cause illnesses. The PHIU urged consumers to remain cautious and prioritize safety.
