A tragic accident on the Southern Expressway near the Pinnaduwa interchange resulted in the death of a 10-year-old girl and left three family members seriously injured. The incident occurred last night when a car traveling from Kottawa towards Palatuwa collided with the rear of a lorry.
According to police reports, the driver of the car, reportedly falling asleep at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the lorry traveling in the same direction between mile markers 100 L and 100.1 L.
The car was carrying a family consisting of a mother, father, and their two daughters. Upon impact, the family members sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Karapitiya Hospital for treatment. Tragically, one of the daughters, a 10-year-old girl from the Nupe area of Matara, succumbed to her injuries upon admission to the hospital.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the accident, which serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of driving while fatigued.
