An unidentified fever is rapidly spreading across the Jaffna District with health authorities currently investigating its nature. Preliminary tests are underway to determine whether the illness is related to leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever according to the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health
Dr. T. Sathyamoorthy, Director of Jaffna Hospital, confirmed that the death toll has risen to five, with victims aged between 20 and 65. These individuals succumbed to the fever, which was accompanied by respiratory complications.
Dr. Kumudu Weerakoon from the Epidemiology Unit explained that patients are primarily presenting with fever and respiratory issues. Samples are being collected from those affected to identify the exact cause of the illness.
To mitigate the spread of the disease, the Ministry of Health is offering free antibiotics to individuals at high risk, such as those working in water-related occupations. These antibiotics can be obtained from Public Health Inspectors at the respective Medical Officer of Health offices.
Dr. Weerakoon also urged residents in the affected areas to seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms. She emphasized that early intervention is vital for effective recovery.
As investigations continue, authorities are closely monitoring the situation in Jaffna to ensure the health and safety of the public.
