Speaker of Parliament Asoka Ranwala will make a formal statement about the recent controversies surrounding his doctorate, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced today ( December 10).

Speaking at the Cabinet press conference, Dr. Jayatissa acknowledged the public and media scrutiny regarding the Speaker’s academic credentials. He also shared that his own PhD had been questioned by some individuals.

The Minister stated that the government would decide on the matter after the Speaker reports his qualifications to the relevant authorities. He assured, “I will make a statement on the government’s course of action if the claims about the doctorate are proven true or false.”

The controversy escalated recently, with social media reports questioning the authenticity of Speaker Ranwala’s doctorate. This led to the removal of the title “Dr.” from his profile on the Sri Lanka Parliament website.
