A tragic accident occurred this afternoon when a boat carrying four children capsized in the 20-acre lake in Sellakataragama resulting in the death of a 19 year-old youth.
The deceased, identified as a local resident of Sellakataragama, was one of four individuals on board the boat when the incident took place. The body of the young man was retrieved from the water and has been deposited at the Kataragama District Hospital, according to police reports.
Fortunately, three other individuals who were aboard the boat managed to survive the ordeal. They were rescued by villagers who responded swiftly to the emergency. The local community’s quick actions helped avert further loss of life.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and are urging residents to exercise caution when engaging in water-related activities.
