Sri Lanka's Parliament witnessed a historic moment today as MP Sugath Wasantha de Silva, the country's first vision-impaired Member of Parliament, addressed the assembly.

MP de Silva was appointed through the National List of the National Peoples’ Power (NPP), led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In his speech, he highlighted that after 76 years of parliamentary history, a differently-abled individual has been given the opportunity to represent the people.

He expressed optimism about demonstrating the positive changes that a differently-abled representative can bring to Parliament in collaboration with the ruling party over the next five years.

MP Sugath Wasantha de Silva’s appointment marks a significant step toward inclusivity in Sri Lankan politics.
