A pressure depression in the South-West Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep pressure depression, the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology reported today.
As of 11 am, the system is located approximately 170 km from Batticaloa and 240 km from Trincomalee, with predictions indicating it may move towards the east of the island and further strengthen into a cyclone by November 27.
In response to this developing weather system, the Department of Meteorology has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across the country. Overcast skies are being observed island-wide, with expected rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some areas, including the North, North-Central, East, Central, Uva, North-West, and South provinces. Authorities have cautioned residents in these regions to remain alert to potential flooding and hazardous weather conditions.
As the depression continues to evolve, officials advise the public to take necessary precautions, especially in coastal areas and low-lying regions prone to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
