In response to heavy rainfall and a significant rise in the water level all ten sluice gates of the Polonnaruwa Parakrama Samudra reservoir have been opened The water level has surged to 99,000 acre-feet, prompting the Irrigation Department to take precautionary measures for the protection of the reservoir.
According to the Irrigation Engineer, the sluice gates are being opened one foot at a time to regulate the flow of water into the nearby Ambangaga. A controlled release of water is being carried out at a rate of 1,000 cubic feet per second.
Authorities have issued a warning to residents in low-lying areas, urging them to remain cautious as the release of water could impact nearby regions. The public is advised to stay alert to updates from local officials regarding any further actions or flood risks.
