The Northern Province is currently grappling with severe flood conditions due to continuous heavy rainfall which has significantly impacted several districts.

Severe Floods in Northern Province Affect Thousands; Exam-Going Students Face Challenges

 According to the District Disaster Management Units, over 15,800 people from 4,310 families have been affected, with numerous houses suffering damage.

The affected districts include Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu. In Mannar, 8,011 people from 2,110 families have been affected, while Jaffna has seen 7,025 people from 1,904 families displaced. 

Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu are also severely impacted, with 570 and 256 people affected, respectively. The ongoing torrential rains, which have lasted nearly a week, are expected to exacerbate the situation, with officials warning that the number of people and properties affected may rise further.

The floods have also disrupted the high school examination schedules, with students facing difficulties in reaching their examination centers due to the heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters. The Disaster Management Center has urged continued vigilance as the flood conditions persist, and efforts are underway to provide relief and assistance to the affected communities.
