Welikanda Police have arrested 11 individuals, including two military personnel, in the Namalgama area of Welikanda on suspicion of attempting an illegal excavation or treasure excavation.
The group was detained along with three motor vehicles and a cab. Among the suspects is a man from Badulla, found with a fake ID, military uniforms, and clothing resembling a brigadier’s attire. Police confirmed he has no ties to the military.
The two military personnel involved are stationed at Hendrick Fort in Trincomalee. The other suspects hail from Yakkala, Padukka, Galewela, Millawa, and Tangalle, according to the ongoing investigation.
The arrests followed a joint operation by Welikanda Police and Military Police from the Polhengoda Army Camp, based on a tip-off. Investigations are continuing.
