A landslide triggered by torrential rains on November 19 has severely impacted the Badulla -Bandarawela main road particularly between the Demodara Quarries and Demodara Water Treatment Plant.
The heavy rainfall caused the water levels in Badulu Oya to rise, leading to the collapse of the riverbank. As a result, a telephone canal and the main water pipe supplying the Demodara Water Treatment Plant have been damaged, causing instability in the area.
That the landslide has forced a suspension of the water supply to Ella Tourist Town and several surrounding regions, including Hali Ela, Demodara, and Badulla. Local residents have expressed grave concern over the situation, highlighting the severe challenges they face in accessing clean water.
The construction of the reservoir across Badulu Oya, designed to supply water to the treatment plant, has raised concerns due to its potential risk of landslides. The instability of the riverbank between the main road and the reservoir, particularly when it is filled with water, poses a severe threat to the area.
In response to the situation, the Road Development Authority (RDA) has implemented a temporary traffic management plan, limiting road access to one lane to ensure safety. Meanwhile, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has initiated emergency work to stabilize the damaged water pipe.
Local authorities are working round the clock to restore water supply and improve the situation. However, residents are urged to remain cautious due to the ongoing risks in the area.
