Former Minister Jeevan Thondaman has urged the National Democratic Front (NDF) to consider former Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera for the party's remaining National List seat, emphasizing the need for experienced politicians in Parliament's opposition.

In a post on ‘X’ (former Twitter), Thondaman highlighted the importance of having seasoned parliamentarians to hold the National People's Power (NPP) government accountable, given its supermajority in Parliament.

He praised Wijesekera’s transformative work in the energy sector, stating, “Kanchana led the most ambitious reforms in our energy sector, introducing competition, transparent pricing, and accountability. Despite knowing the political risks, he prioritized Sri Lankan consumers over his own electoral prospects.”

Thondaman noted that thanks to Wijesekera’s efforts, Sri Lankans can now purchase fuel without depending solely on the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) or Lanka Indian Oil Company (IOC). He added that if similar reforms in the Electricity Act are implemented, citizens would no longer face high prices or power outages from the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

He further advocated for consumer choice and freedom from monopolies in energy, similar to the telecom and fuel sectors.

Meanwhile, internal debates continue within the NDF over Ravi Karunanayake’s appointment as a National List MP. Special police protection has been provided to Karunanayake’s residence amidst ongoing discussions.
