The Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera, has announced plans to introduce a special seating arrangement to support the country's first-ever vision-impaired Member of Parliament. Newly appointed NPP MP Sugath Wasantha de Silva

Sugath Wasantha de Silva, representing the National People’s Power (NPP), was appointed through the NPP’s National List, officially gazetted on yesterday. Parliament is also making technical adjustments to accommodate his unique needs and ensure his full participation.

De Silva, a respected activist and President of the Visually Impaired Graduates’ Council (VIGC), has been a tireless advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. Despite losing his sight in childhood due to an accident, he earned a degree from the University of Colombo and has over 25 years of experience as a social welfare officer.

“We are committed to inclusivity and are taking steps to address Mr. de Silva’s requirements, including seating and technical arrangements,” said Mrs. Rohanadeera.

De Silva’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s political history, showcasing resilience and progress in promoting equal representation.
