US. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung announced that there is currently no travel ban on the country, with the security advisory remaining at Level 2. This advisory level is consistent with that of popular tourist destinations such as France, Italy, and the Maldives.
On October 23, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo implemented travel restrictions for its personnel specifically in Arugam Bay, following credible information regarding a potential threat to tourist sites in the area.
Ambassador Chung emphasized that this action does not signify a blanket travel ban for the entire country.
“When we became aware of a specific threat in the Arugam Bay area, we shared these known details with the Sri Lankan authorities, who responded quickly,” Chung stated. She highlighted the active coordination between the U.S. and Sri Lankan authorities, expressing appreciation for their commitment to safety and transparency.
Last week’s alert advised American citizens to avoid Arugam Bay until further notice, while the overall advisory for Sri Lanka remains unchanged at Level 2, indicating a moderate risk for travelers.
Chung reiterated, “Sri Lanka is still at Level 2, just like the Maldives, France, and Italy,” reassuring potential travelers of the country’s status amid the recent security concerns.
