Senior Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member, Former MP Lakshman Kiriella has announced his retirement from politics, stating he will not contest the upcoming parliamentary election, ending a 36-year career. A seasoned politician and lawyer, Kiriella served as a Member of Parliament from the Kandy District, former Leader of the House, and held positions as Minister of Public Enterprises, Kandy Development, and Higher Education and Highways from 2015 to 2019.
Kiriella expressed his intention to rest after decades of public service. Reports suggest his daughter may contest from the Kandy district under the SJB banner, with confirmation expected today.
