The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development recently discussed using QR codes to collect PET plastic bottles for recycling.
Chaired by MP Ajith Mannapperuma, the committee noted that despite 450,000 tons of plastic being imported annually, only 50,000 tons are recycled.
Specifically, only 400 out of 1200 tons of PET plastic are recycled monthly, with the rest polluting the environment. The committee decided to extend the proposal submission deadline to August 27th and mandated the Extended Producer Responsibility system.
In addition, the Ministry of Environment will study international methods for PET plastic collection via QR codes.
