The lawyer who filed a Fundamental Rights petition against today's Presidential election paid Rs. 500,000 in legal costs to the Supreme Court, as ordered after the Court dismissed his petition.

Attorney-at-Law Aruna Laksiri sought a declaration in his petition that the Presidential election should not proceed without a referendum on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

On July 15, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, and Justice Priyantha Fernando, dismissed the petition and ordered the petitioner to pay Rs. 500,000 in costs. The Court ruled that the application lacked a legal basis for further proceedings.
