The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has arrested 16 suspects, including a woman, for their alleged involvement in organized criminal activities.
Initially, CCD officers detained a 24-year-old woman in Colombo 15 suspected of underworld ties. Subsequently, 15 others were arrested on charges of aiding and abetting organized crime.
These arrests were part of a special operation launched on March 19, 2024, under the 'Yukthiya' initiative aimed at tackling the increasing incidence of organized crime in the Western and Southern Provinces.
Since its inception, the operation has resulted in the arrest of 2,398 individuals as of yesterday (20). Among those apprehended are individuals directly engaged in organized crime and others suspected of assisting criminal activities.
The CCD, Matara Division Crimes Division, and Western Province (North) Crimes Division are conducting ongoing investigations into the detainees under detention orders, according to police.
