Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said that it is premature to identify any threats to presidential candidates and former presidents, as the newly appointed security committee has only been operational for two days.

Alles clarified that the committee's primary task is to assess the security requirements of the candidates and establish protocols accordingly.

The committee comprises the Ministry of Public Security Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Chief of National Intelligence (CNI), and the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) responsible for elections. Alles mentioned they will collaborate with other relevant agencies as necessary.

Regarding potential threats, Alles responded, "The committee was formed just two days ago. How can one assess threats in such a short time? No such reports have been received yet," he said.

In response to a recent incident involving an attack on former US President Donald Trump during a campaign rally, President Ranil Wickremesinghe submitted a Cabinet paper proposing enhanced security measures for presidential candidates and former presidents, along with the establishment of a committee to conduct threat assessments and ensure adequate security.

According to a statement from the President’s Media Division (PMD), the committee will be chaired by the Ministry of Public Security Secretary, with oversight by a Police Deputy Inspector General tasked with coordinating all security arrangements in close collaboration with the Election Commission.
