A pregnant woman, missing from home for several days, was discovered on Saturday evening (13) by Govindupura police in Weddgala, Kalawana, in the company of her lover.
According to reports, her husband had filed a complaint with the police stating that she had left home on July 09 to attend a maternity clinic but never returned. The following day, an unidentified person called him demanding a ransom of Rs. 5 million for her release.
Acting on information from a WhatsApp message traceable to the area, a police team from the Monaragala Division Crime Investigation Unit raided a house and apprehended the 31-year-old woman and her 21-year-old lover. They were subsequently handed over to Govindupura police for further investigation.
Investigations revealed that the woman had met her boyfriend online five months ago and had developed a relationship with him. She had arranged to meet him in Siyambalanduwa town, from where he took her to his residence in Weddagala, Kalawana.
Police confirmed that the pair had conspired to extort ransom money from the woman's husband.
The male suspect appeared before Siyambalanduwa Magistrate S.S. Dhanushka Roshan Anuruddha and was remanded until July 18, while the woman was returned to her parents' custody.
