Minister of Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva has announced that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will resume funding for the second terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) extension project. The project, facilitated under a concessionary loan scheme, aims to enhance the airport's capacity to manage increased air traffic.
Originally intended to improve facilities at Katunayake Airport, the project focuses on constructing a second passenger terminal equipped with advanced Japanese technology. The terminal is designed as an Eco-Airport, featuring innovations such as rainwater harvesting, recycled water for sanitary use, photovoltaic power generation, solar energy harvesting, LED lighting, and energy-efficient glazing.
Minister de Silva emphasized that the new terminal, once completed, will significantly bolster the airport's capacity to handle up to 15 million passengers annually, thereby alleviating congestion and improving air traffic flow.
Initially scheduled for completion in 2024 under the management of Japan's Taisei Corporation, the project faced delays due to Sri Lanka's recent economic challenges. This setback led JICA to suspend funding temporarily, prompting Taisei Corporation to halt construction activities.
With JICA's renewed commitment, the project is expected to regain momentum, marking a crucial step forward in enhancing Sri Lanka's aviation infrastructure and ensuring sustainable development in line with international standards.
