In a statement issued by Sudath Chandrasekara, the Chairman of the United Youth Organization and a former Police Inspector, he strongly condemned retired police officers who supported the National People’s Power (NPP), accusing them of betraying the Police Department. Chandrasekara elaborated further, labeling their actions as a grave insult to the department and their former colleagues, describing it as a despicable act that warrants strong condemnation.
Chandrasekara, reflecting on his own experiences as a police officer during the 1988-89 period, highlighted the severe threats posed by the JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna). He recounted facing death threats himself, including an incident where he survived a JVP hand grenade attack during a ceremony at Harischandra College in Negombo in 1988. He emphasized the brutality of the JVP insurgency, questioning how many police officers were murdered, how many families were affected, and how much destruction occurred to national property during that time.
In particular, Chandrasekara singled out Ravi Seneviratne, expressing his belief that individuals like him, who allegedly support the NPP despite the JVP's history, are exhibiting contemptible behavior. He attributed Seneviratne's actions to bitterness, potentially stemming from personal experiences such as being remanded for drunk driving, which he likened to what he termed as typical JVP characteristics.
