The Meteorology Department has issued a warning regarding thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning in various regions across Sri Lanka. The alert encompasses Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, Uva, and North-central provinces, as well as Matale, Mullaitivu, and Kurunegala districts, slated for today, the 9th of May.
Anticipated are temporary but localized strong winds alongside the thunderous downpour, amplifying the potential risks to the populace. As a proactive measure, citizens are urged to undertake suitable precautions to mitigate any potential damages caused by the impending lightning activity.
Specifically, individuals are advised against the use of wired telephones and electrical appliances during the stormy weather. Furthermore, caution is urged regarding open-air transportation modalities such as bicycles, tractors, and boats. Vigilance against potential hazards like fallen trees and power lines is also encouraged.
For immediate assistance during emergencies, the public is directed to reach out to local disaster management authorities.
Looking ahead, the Meteorology Department has forecasted showers or thundershowers in numerous provinces across the island nation, particularly after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, the 10th of May. Notably, heavy showers exceeding 100mm are predicted in select areas of North-central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, and Uva provinces, as well as Mullaitivu district.
Moreover, Western and Southern provinces, alongside Puttalam district, are expected to experience showers during the morning hours, according to the latest updates from the Meteorology Department.
