Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, has taken legal action against an individual and two US firms for allegedly circulating defamatory videos about him on social media platforms.
Filed at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday,the case invokes the provisions of the Online Safety Act.
The accused parties include Thushara Saliya Ranawaka, believed to be of Sri Lankan origin residing abroad, and the American multinational corporation Google, along with its online video-sharing platform, YouTube. The Army Commander's petition urges the court to summon the respondents and issue an order to halt the dissemination of the contentious videos across social media channels.
This move underscores the growing significance of online defamation and the legal measures being taken to address it. As social media continues to play an influential role in shaping public opinion, such cases highlight the importance of safeguarding individuals' reputations in the digital realm.
