The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning indicating that the heat index, which reflects the temperature felt by the human body, is set to surge to 'Extreme Caution' levels in various provinces across Sri Lanka.
Regions including Northern, North-central, North-western, and Eastern provinces, along with the Monaragala district, are expected to experience heat index values ranging from 46°C to 52°C.
Furthermore, the advisory highlights that certain areas in Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces, as well as the Matale district, may witness heat index values reaching the 'Caution level.'
Issued at 04:00 p.m. today (05), the advisory is effective for tomorrow (06). Residents are urged to remain cautious as the elevated temperatures could lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, heatstroke.
The Heat Index Forecast, calculated based on relative humidity and maximum temperature, serves as a crucial indicator of the conditions experienced by individuals exposed to the heat, according to the Meteorology Department.
