Thirty-eight sites have been earmarked for development within the Pinnawala-Kitulgala tourism corridor as part of the Government’s plan to expedite the area's transformation into a tourism zone, revealed the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

SLTDA Chairman Priantha Fernando stated that the SLTDA has already conducted 2-3 rounds of discussions with the relevant Local Government (LG) authorities regarding establishing the Pinnawala-Kitulgala tourism corridor as a designated tourism zone. He noted that the LG authorities have identified approximately 38 sites for development in the area.

"The local authorities have pinpointed the areas for development based on previous budget allocations. Discussions are ongoing, and we will determine priorities and move forward. The tourism potential in this area is significant, but improvements in site conditions are necessary," he added.

Fernando also emphasized that developing the tourism corridor would require collaborative efforts between the SLTDA, local authorities, Government agencies, and relevant district development committees.

However, he mentioned that the specific approach for carrying out the corridor's development is yet to be finalized: "We need to work out the details – who will oversee the process, who will handle development tasks, and so forth."

Fernando highlighted that the corridor's development will be a comprehensive project aimed at enhancing infrastructure and promoting the area.

During the 2024 Budget speech, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as the Minister of Finance, unveiled plans to accelerate the corridor's development into a tourism zone.

"The Kitulgala white water rafting area, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, and other nearby tourist attractions are being developed as part of this tourism zone. The Rambukkana entrance of the Central Expressway will facilitate this development. The proposed Galigamuwa New Town is envisioned as the central hub of this tourism region. An allocation of Rs. 750 million has been made to implement this project jointly over a three-year period," he stated.
