In response to escalating criminal activities within prison facilities, law enforcement authorities have implemented decisive actions, deploying undercover officers to surveil and thwart illicit operations.
Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon disclosed that organized criminals are being held in custody across 15 prisons nationwide, prompting the deployment of 15 specialized police teams as undercover operatives to monitor their activities.
"Despite incarceration, organized criminals continue to orchestrate underworld activities and drug trafficking within prison walls. Under the 'Yukthiya' operation, the police have undertaken targeted measures to combat these illicit activities," the IGP said.
Equipped with necessary resources, the undercover officers are tasked with closely monitoring remanded underworld figures, identifying networks, and individuals facilitating organized crime and drug trafficking within correctional facilities.
