Stringent security measures have been implemented in anticipation of the arrival of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Sri Lanka today. The President's itinerary includes a one-day official visit to participate in a public event commemorating the launch of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP).
President Raisi is expected to land at Mattala Airport and proceed to the Uma Oya project by road. The security convoy accompanying him will consist of personnel from the tri-forces and PSD security.
This visit marks the first time an Iranian President has visited Sri Lanka since former President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit in April 2008. It follows a special invitation extended by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Uma Oya project, akin to the Mahaweli Development Project, stands as one of Sri Lanka's largest irrigation initiatives.
A pivotal aspect of President Raisi's visit will be the signing of five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Iran and Sri Lanka, as stated by the PMD.
