Fr Cyril Gamini Fernando, Member of the Communications Committee at the Archdiocese of Colombo, revealed today that the Catholic Church has yet to accept proposals from the National Peoples Power (NPP) or the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) regarding investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.
Despite recent submissions of proposals by the NPP and SJB, Fr Fernando clarified that the Church is still in the process of evaluating the recommendations before making a decision on acceptance. He emphasized that the mere receipt of proposals does not imply endorsement by the Church.
Fr Fernando's remarks come in response to allegations made by Palitha Range Bandara, General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), who suggested that the Cardinal may be aligning with political parties. Fr Fernando countered, pointing out that the UNP was in power during the time of the attacks and had ample opportunity to conduct a thorough investigation.
Furthermore, Fr Fernando extended an invitation to all political parties to submit their proposals regarding the Easter Sunday attacks. He emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and welcomed input from various political entities.
The statement highlights ongoing discussions and scrutiny surrounding the investigation into the tragic events of Easter Sunday, underscoring the complexities and sensitivities involved in the process.
