The Court of Appeal has summoned former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra to appear before the court on May 8 regarding a contempt of court application filed against her by petitioner Hisham Jamaldeen.
The petitioner alleges that Premachandra made statements to the media regarding a bail order from the Magistrate's Court of Mount Lavinia, thereby interfering with ongoing judicial proceedings and undermining public trust in the administration of justice.
Jamaldeen seeks an order under Section 10(3)(a) of the Contempt of Court, Tribunal, or Institution Act No. 08 of 2024.
A two-judge bench comprising Justices Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Dammika Ganepola issued the notice for Premachandra to appear before the Court of Appeal on May 8, 2024.
Counsel Nishan Sydney Premathiratne, with Gamindu Karunasena, instructed by Sarravanan Neelakandan Law Associates, represents the petitioner.
